Looking for an easy way to boost the nutritional value of your diet?  You may want to consider this flavorful addition.  Wheat germ is gaining popularity and for good reason.  Just two tablespoons supplies only 50 calories yet provides 2 grams of fiber, 4 grams of protein and 20% of our daily needs for vitamin E and folic acid.  In addition, it is a good source of thiamin, iron, magnesium and zinc.  Wheat germ is a perfect addition to any diet, but especially a calorie or fat restricted diet in which starchy foods (like breads and baked goods made with flour) or higher fat foods (such as oils, nuts and seeds) are limited or eliminated from the diet.

So what exactly is wheat germ?  It is the vitamin-packed embryo or sprouting portion of the wheat kernel that is separated before milling.  It is the primary source of nutrition for the kennel.  Wheat germ is found in whole-wheat and whole-wheat flour but is also sold separately raw or as toasted flakes (as in the photo).  And, it is easier than you think to include this nutritional powerhouse to your diet.  Check out these tips for getting more wheat germ into your daily diet:
