This basic blueberry protein smoothie is creamy, highly nutritious and a delicious way to satisfy your sweet tooth and hold you over until your next meal.

I have a lot of smoothie recipes on my blog. That’s because they are a quick way to pack a lot of nutrition into a meal – when made right. As I explain in my post about building a better smoothie, the trick is to make them taste good while keeping them nutritionally balanced.

Smoothies Can Be Healthy Snacks

What do you think of when you hear the word snack? You might visualize a piece of fruit, some nuts or something crunchy like pretzels or crackers. While those are all snack items, not one of them provides a variety of macronutrients. Fruit is a source of carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, but doesn’t provide any protein. Nuts are a healthy fat option, but they are low in protein and carbohydrates. Pretzels and crackers also lack protein.

A healthy snack shouldn’t just fill you up, it should include nutrients to help you feel good and add value to your daily diet. The best way to do that is with a combination of foods that supply a variety of nutrients. That’s not to say you can’t have a sweet treat – if you want a bowl of ice cream have it. Just know the difference between a treat and a healthy snack! This basic blueberry smoothie has both carbohydrates and protein while also supplying loads of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. It is a healthy snack! It isn’t enough food to be a meal, but it is a great way to curb hunger between meals.  It also makes a good evening snack or a nutritious way to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Basic Blueberry Smoothie – Nutrition

This basic blueberry smoothie is made with only 3 ingredients – milk, Greek yogurt and blueberries. It doesn’t get any easier than that. The entire smoothie is only 120 calories, but it provides 14 grams of high-quality protein and 2 grams of fiber. And, the combo of nutrients provides 15% of the DV for calcium, 6% DV for Vitamin D and 6% DV for potassium. That’s a lot of nutrition for only 120 calories. It’s perfect for anyone that is on a lower calorie diet, and needs to more protein and nutrition into snacks. {Hello mom!}

One of my favorite things about this smoothie is the bright blue color. It’s one of those snacks that you just feel healthy drinking. Blueberries are packed with polyphenols that have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. They are responsible for the bright-blue color as well as the fiber that this smoothie offers. Read more about blueberry nutrition in my post about the benefits of eating blueberries.
