Where’s your protein? My kids hear that question a lot. I’m asking because I’m trying to teach them from a young age how to build a balanced breakfast. My kids, and many of my clients, do a great job at finding the carbohydrates and fat, but pairing it with high-quality protein can be a challenge. Espcially if you’re not that into eggs.
Eggs are an obvious protein choice, but not everyone likes eggs. And, even if you love them, eating them every day can grow old. If you find yourself in a breakfast rut, try rotating through these egg-free breakfast ideas that are packed- with protein.
Ham and Veggie Bowl
Dice ham and sauté it in a pan with olive oil and with a variety of vegetables. Once they are soft, transfer the veggie mixture to a plate or stuff everything inside of a whole wheat pita with the 2 Tbsp. feta cheese. Balance it out with a side of berries. For a nutrition bonus, top it with tons of tomatoes. too!
Egg-Free Breakfast Wrap
Fill a whole wheat or corn tortilla with black beans, 1/3 cup whole grain rice, two tablespoons of avocado and 2 tablespoons of salsa. Balance it out with a side of fruit. For a nutrition bonus, wrap some dark green leafy vegetables inside it, too.
Greek Yogurt Bowl
Mix some slivered almonds and fresh berries or dried fruit into four ounces of Greek yogurt. Balance it out with some low-fat granola or a whole wheat mini-bagel. For a nutrition bonus, put the yogurt, fruit and nuts into a blender with 1 cup kale and make a veggie and fruit smoothie out of it.
Egg-free Breakfast Sandwich
1 slice Canadian bacon, 1 slice cheddar cheese, 2 tomato slices, and 1 Tbsp. hummus between a whole wheat English muffin. Serve with ½ banana. (Nutrition Bonus: Top with green and red peppers.)
Protein-Packed Hot Cereal
